Software performance is a hard problem needing deep understanding and advanced tools, and WOSP is dedicated to advancing the area. WOSP 2008 is a venue for the active interchange of ideas from people working in various fields of software performance engineering (SPE), computing, and telecommunications. Focusing on the intersection of software and performance, this international workshop brings together researchers and professionals with different experience and perspectives, in software and/or in performance analysis. This includes software engineers, developers, testers, performance engineers, performance analysts, and modelers who are creating new tools and methods to address the challenges of increasing system complexity, rapidly evolving software technologies, short time to market, incomplete documentation, and incomplete requirements.

The research and experience presented at the WOSP workshops support the goal of building predictable performance into software by specifying and analyzing quantitative behavior from the early development phases of a system throughout its entire life cycle. Analysis may be based on various kinds of modeling, design and measurement tools. Modern software systems are complex (distributed over a wide area, mobile, running on heterogeneous platforms, belonging to different administrative domains, supporting all sorts of industrial, business, and medical systems, and often have strict performance and scalability requirements. We invite research and experience contributions to the workshop in furtherance of this goal.
